The recent 40% surge in container train theft might seem like a distant crime, but its impact is already subtly creeping into our daily lives and affecting our wallets. When goods meant for store shelves are stolen in transit, it creates a ripple effect through the supply chain. Retailers, faced with lost inventory, are often forced to raise prices to compensate, leading to higher costs for consumers like us. Insurance premiums for shipping companies also increase to cover the rising risk of theft, and those added expenses are invariably passed on to the end consumer in the form of higher product costs. We are the End User that pays the cost for errors and thefts along the supply chain & logistics cooridors.
So, while we might not see the stolen containers directly, we're indirectly paying for the increased security measures, insurance hikes, and lost goods every time we buy something, making container train theft a crime that ultimately picks our pockets. I handled a recent claim a year ago (Q2-2024) when the surge unknown to the public became rampet just twelve months prior (Q1-2023). The movement of "free-for-all" trains, originating perhaps from Houston, and extending westward to encompass both on-dock rail systems within the sprawling Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach. Westbound container trains pilfered enroute for US Exports off the west coast.
