Generational Cool Guys & Choices
1930’s and 1950’s movies that seemed to be on T.V. all the time, was still influential through the 1970’s. The Lords of Flatbush, and Richard Dreyfuss in American Graffiti would later become something called Cruising on Whittier Boulevard. A European East Coast roughness, that translated in California as Classic Cars, Beach Boys, LowRider’s and Elysian Park in Los Angeles: Chicano Chollo's and Cholla town.
Roamie and Rougie were the coolest sisters I ever met in Jr. High. They were chollas, real ones from generations of Chicano gangsters at the tail end of the 70’s. Roamie was very kind to me and I think she knew I was afraid because we were new to Long Beach, and considered outsiders from L.A. She fended off the Chicano gangster bullies at school, and a whole new set of assholes I had to deal with. We met in P.E. class and there was an unspoken understanding between her and I. She already heard of my reputation with fighting, and it confused her because I was basically a straight A (if I was interested in the topic) student.
Most sloppy lazy students that would ask others to copy off their homework would get punked before class started. It gave me great satisfaction when they would harass me for my homework to copy from. Here’s my normal answer to every dumbass, lazy bully:
“I wasn’t thinking of your fken ass when I was up late doing the work. In fact, I don’t think anyone in the classroom thought of you, as they did their homework too. So what is it exactly that you want from me for free? A black eye is free, did you want one of those?”
Then I’d let the teacher know. “Hey this kinda shit needs to stop. I don’t have time for idiots while trying to learn. Can you handle this or did you need help?’
A smile from a grateful Teacher regarding a bully who finally got checked, was the normal response. I love it when authority lines up with reason.
